Fell off schedule but I’m back so your inbox won’t have the loneliest time.
Annoyances.
Men in cringe t-shirts.
When I was in high school, I wanted to wear t-shirts with a smart-ass little phrase on it, probably because of the 2000’s Hollywood girlies who set the trend. My favorite was Happy Bunny, but I’d comb the racks of Ross looking for any clever t-shirt that could make a statement on my behalf since I was extremely shy and known for not speaking. I guess I wanted to be perceived as cute by psycho?
Honestly, the draw of a funny t-shirt still compels me and I’ll occasionally indulge. But this Summer, I witnessed men wearing t-shirts in the wild revealing far more about themselves than I am interested in knowing.

Okay I realize the t-shirt above is an American Pie reference but like… is that whomst you want to represent? You know what, make men mysterious again. Forget authenticity, be aloof! Show don’t tell! Please! I really don’t want to know!
Enjoyments.
It’s difficult to put into words how powerful this film is. The story, based on “The Sing Sing Follies,” centers on inmates at Sing Sing Maximum Security prison involved in the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program. Remarkably, most of the cast was made up of formerly incarcerated participants of the program, and the performances delivered both gravity and joy. I’m so glad I saw it, and recommend you check it out if you’re able to!
Within the first two pages of this book, I was hooked by the narrator and committed to following the story wherever it went. And well well well, did it go places! Lust, affairs, friendships, gender neutral parenting, perimenopause, non-monogamy, social media, role play; for a very cerebral narrator, this book gets into a lot of action. I was riveted!
In some ways, I’m reminded of the main characters of My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh and The Guest by Emma Cline (who blurbed this book!). But those characters absolutely annoyed me, I found their passivity excruciating. In All Fours, the main character is actively destructive in some ways, and knowingly passive at times, and her willingness to do the wrong thing as long as it means doing something made for a compelling read.
The NYT has a more in depth summary if you want to preview before committing!
Thoughts.
When September starts, this song plays on a loop in my head. It’s an intrusive tune I can’t stop thinking about, and I also kind of wonder what would happen if you could actually just wake me up when September ends!
Later this month, it may get drowned out by September.
I got covid, and thankfully am fully recovered, but here’s two things that made it absolutely clear to me how sick I was:
Orange gatorade tasted SO good. Refreshing even! I was grateful to be sipping it.
I heard a song off Sabrina Carpenter’s new album and my full complete conscious thought was, “Music is good.” Which is true! But I was simply unable to put a more complex coherent sentence together on why I was enjoying it!
This cover of Espresso is incredibly satisfying as a person who cannot stop thinking about being woken up when September ends.
